License & safety on Koh Samui

Do you need a license to ride a scooter? Legally, yes. Thai law requires all motorists to hold a valid driving licence. For foreign visitors that means a Thai licence or an International Driving Permit (IDP) with a motorcycle endorsement. Your home licence alone is not sufficient, even if it includes a motorcycle category.

Police checkpoints are common around tourist areas. Without proper documents the standard fine is ฿1,000, payable on the spot — you get a receipt valid for 24 hours.

The real risk isn't the fine, it's insurance. If you have an accident without a valid IDP, your travel insurance may reject the claim entirely. Medical bills here can run into hundreds of thousands of baht. We strongly recommend getting an IDP before your trip — most countries issue one in a day for around $20–30.
